Caring for Your Water Heater

Water heaters are an important part of our daily lives. Without a working water heater, you wouldn’t be able to take a hot shower or bath, or complete any chores that require heated water - like washing dishes or a doing a load of laundry. Water heaters work hard to provide you with precious hot water, and on the occasion that yours may break, you’ll discover just how important they are to your household. Water heaters typically have a 15 year life span, but it can be less than that if you don’t give it proper TLC.

Follow these routine maintenance tips to keep your water heater in top shape:

‍Lower the Temperature

‍Adjust the thermostat to 120 degrees. You’ll save up to 5% in energy costs for every 10 degrees you lower the temperature, plus you’ll reduce the risk of scalding (especially important if you have young kids!).

‍Keep the Unit Clear & Clean

‍Always maintain 2 feet of clearance around the appliance unless the manual specifically states otherwise. Remove sediment and debris from the tank by turning off the cold water supply, hooking up a garden hose to the drain valve, and then running it into a bucket until the water is clear. This also makes the unit operate more quietly.

‍Test the Valve

‍Annually test the temperature-pressure relief valve by quickly discharging it two or three times. After testing, keep an eye out for small leaks from the valve.

‍Insulate

‍Newer units are usually already insulated, but if your water heater is older, try insulating with a fiberglass jacket (be careful to avoid contact with the flue). You should also insulate the hot and cold water pipes.
